The Baytown Sun marks the 60th anniversary of Baytown's consolidation with Pelly and Goose Creek in 1948. The city hosts a 5 p.m. anniversary event at City Hall as residents share memories of Baytown's birth, growth, and future.

Baytown historian Buck Young, author of The Making of a City published in 1998, reflects on 50 years since the city’s beginnings and a decade since his book. He notes rapid changes, new schools, and aging plans, with no new history underway.
Voters on Saturday approved a new city charter by 1,888 to 254 and adopted a name change from Pelly to Baytown by a large margin. Pelly residents backed the charter 183 to 108, with Precinct 149 in Baytown showing the strongest support. Goose Creek Precinct 100 produced the largest total, 564 ballots, for the charter despite mixed results elsewhere. City commissioners will canvass the votes tonight.
The Sun recalls eight early communities that became part of the Tri-Cities region before Baytown's 1948 consolidation. It notes Headquarters Fairbanks Gailard Landing Evergreen Bell Prairie Bayland Baytown and Midway and explains consolidation reduced eight neighborhoods to three then aimed to join to one. Public memory credits Fred Hartman and the Feb 14, 1947 vote as pivotal moments.
In January 1948 Baytown, Pelly and Goose Creek merged while a cold spell swept the area with subfreezing winds from Canada. The headline story centers on a planned Baytown La Porte tunnel along SH 146 funded by a 3.5 million bond approved earlier, with another tunnel planned for Pasadena.
