Residents of Eva Maude Addition lost gas for an hour and a half Monday while a four inch valve on the Houston Natural Gas Co. line was repaired after a leak was found. District manager Harry F. Massey said the outage was needed to snuff off the supply during valve work and officials were unsure if the valve was faulty at installation or developed a leak later.
MERCEDES Texas UP candidate Jimmy Phillips charged Tuesday that some of the worst block deals in the $100 million Veterans Land program were hatched in 1952 while Price Daniel was attorney general and campaigning for the U.S. Senate. Phillips said Daniel, now a Senate candidate, led a three member Veterans Land Board and neglected duties to campaign for higher office. He cited a Senate probe into Texas insurance scandals and urged focus on veterans land controversies, as more sordid facts remain.
The Baytown branch of the Texas Employment Commission will stay open while a Pasadena office serves the area. Houston district official Homer H. Ralph Alexander Anderson known as Andy Anderson, longtime outdoor writer and sports columnist, died in his sleep in Houston at age 66. He contributed to the Houston Press and was active with veterans, with a career spanning over 25 years and broad recognition from coast to coast.
Los Angeles up to 29 dead after the Santa Fe train wreck. District Attorney S Ernest Roll found no evidence of criminal negligence, citing possible mechanical failure. Investigations planned before Feb 3 will present evidence to a grand jury. Fireman Homer Smith testified the engineer Parrish froze on the emergency pedal as the train left the curve. Parrish, 61, said he blacked out and cannot recall releasing the deadman’s control.
