Meany Faults Ford Plan. Texas Unemployment Rises

President Meany criticized Ford's economic and energy program and urged an emergency plan to restore jobs and stabilize the economy. Texas unemployment reached 4.8 percent with 245,500 jobless, as officials appealed for $4 million for retired teachers and state workers. The Civil Rights Commission urged extending the Voting Rights Act for 10 more years due to ongoing hostility to minority participation. Contract Talks Tue as Steelworkers Strike Ethyl Plant

Workers from United Steelworkers Local 16000 began a strike at Ethyl in Pasadena at 4 p m on Wednesday demanding new contract terms retroactive to January 8. About 670 Ethyl employees are represented with roughly 1 000 total workers honoring the picket lines amid ongoing negotiations.

Tentative union Exxon contract reached for Gulf Coast workers

Miss Baytown Lee College Pageant Planned for Spring

The Part Of Bicentennial Fete LC and Baytown Lee College sponsor Miss Baytown a beauty and talent pageant. Preliminary rounds begin April 19 with finals on April 26 at Ross Sterling High School. Contestants must be Baytown residents or Lee College students aged 17 to 28 and meet graduation and marriage criteria. The winner advances to the Miss Texas Pageant and may reach the Miss America Pageant. Prizes include at least 200 dollar scholarship and 150 dollars in clothing for state competition. Co chairs are Theresa Moore and Helen Kirkpatrick.
