Ellis elected Baytown school board president in 4-2 vote

Baytown School Board chose Wan da Ellis as president for the coming year in a 4-2 vote. Heyen was elected vice president, Smith secretary, and Mayo assistant secretary after a contentious meeting with Barolak swinging to Ellis on the final vote. New trustees Heyen and Mayo won their seats in Saturday’s election with Heyen defeating Hall and Boyce and Mayo defeating Jackson and Kozlowski.

Economy climbs 6.8 percent in 1994 growth surge

Weather forecast for Baytown amid warm wet unsettled spell

A National Weather Service spokesman says Baytown will see warm wet weather with a 30 percent rain chance Tuesday night, mid-30s temperatures, and a 50 percent rain chance on Wednesday with temperatures in the mid-40s. From 8 a.m. Monday to 4 a.m. Tuesday a 24 degree low and 39 degree high were recorded.

Thomas Services Slated Wednesday

Funeral services for Benjamin W. Thomas, longtime Baytown resident, are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Grace United Methodist Church with Revs. Charles Godby and Asbury Lenox officiating. Dr. Ben Thomas earned a master’s from Mississippi College and a doctorate in philosophy from Penn State, worked for Humble Oil, founded Thomas Research and Instrument Co. in Deer Park, consulted for the Space Center in Clear Lake, and taught instrument technology at San Jacinto College from 1972 to 1979. He was a Baytown Chamber of Commerce member and active in Deer Park Rotary Club and Goose Creek Country Club.

Longtime Baytown civic leader Satterwhite dies at 77

Satterwhite 77 of Baytown died after a lengthy illness. A retired chemical engineer with Exxon Baytown Refinery from 1929 to 1969, he was active in First Christian Church and led Baytown Chamber of Commerce boards. He chaired the East Harris County Boy Scout District and headed numerous community projects. He also held roles with Lee College Community Chest March of Dimes and various scientific and professional societies. Funeral services set for Thursday at First Christian Church with Rev. Mike Weinman officiating.
