Baytown League of Women Voters will assist in selling poll taxes on January 29 30 and 31. Mrs Don Wynnemer voters service chairman announced. Taxes sold at Sears Henke’s Super-Valu State and Lewis and Coker Store in Lakewood and at Weingarten's on January 31. The $150 poll tax is required to vote in all future elections with exemptions for 23 this year or 1 years old or older, and for newcomers from another state their first year of voting.

Robert Frank lin Stuckey, 77, a Crosby resident since 192?, retired Southern Pacific Railroad Co agent, died Monday morning in a Bay town hospital. Funeral at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Earthman Highlands Chapel with Rev. Dan Bynum officiating. Interment San Jacinto Memorial Cemetery. survivors include wife Mies Bloc Studies and six daughters, plus 19 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
A bitter arctic front swept Texas with near freezing rain and ice. Cities including Dallas Fort Worth Abilene and Lubbock saw temperatures tumble into single digits while dense fog halted Houston ship channel traffic and delayed 24 ships. Schools closed and travel hazards grew as freezing drizzle turned to ice across the region.
A head-on collision on Decker Drive near Goose Creek Stream Bridge at 9 am killed 77-year-old R R Pryor, a school district carpenter. Pryor died at San Jacinto Hospital after chest injuries. Charges filed include negligent homicide against George Torres and license-suspended driving against Warren Luke. Pryor survived by his widow and three daughters and two sons.
President Kennedy reported the nation met its 1961 recovery aims and outlined plans for a stronger 1963 production level. He urged antirecession measures including temporary tax cuts and quick public works, seeking up to 2 billion in spending triggers and tax leeway to stimulate jobs and growth.
Funeral services for Hermann Stegmann of Baytown, 60, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sintank Funeral Home in Brenham. He died Monday at his home after 20 years in Baytown and a career with Brown and Root Construction Co. He is survived by his wife and several children, two brothers, a sister, and many grandchildren. The record notes he will lie in state at Earthnisn Funeral Home until 2 p.m. Tuesday.
Bob Gilmore the Sun’s new circulation director welcomed about 70 carriers and their fathers at Rose Land Park Pavilion on Saturday. He outlined plans to involve carriers with local businesses and expand duties across Texas papers. Gilmore, a WWII veteran from Paterson NY, comes from Tuscaloosa News where he was circulation manager for nine years.
Stan Burch a 42 year old supervisor in the storehouse at Humble Baytown Refinery died of a heart attack at about 9 15 am Monday on the job Funeral arrangements will be announced by Earthman Funeral Home He is survived by his widow Emma and a 12 year old son Stephen two brothers WB Burch of Baytown and RR Ruslit Burch of Fairmont Park Born May 12 1919 in Port Arthur he attended public schools and the University of Texas Employed at the Baytown Refinery since 19 he served in the Navy during World War II and was a member of the Masonic Club and Chad Community.
