Baytown residents read of litter pickup by Sun Spots Troop 1247 led by Mrs. John Foyt on Decker Drive. Mayor Seaborn Cravey commends the group for beautification efforts amid a weekend forecast of 91 high 62 low, with Bay town tides noted.
H. H. Meier of Humble Oil Baytown Refinery announced a new hiring push for 1947, adding about 100 wage workers. Applications for operation trainees open January 23 at the Community Building, with a testing schedule through January 28. Trainees will fill operating and craft roles. about 200 workers have already joined related programs since June 1965.
Baytown officials discovered a 1947 zoning ordinance from consolidation of the Tri-Cities that apparently was never enforced. A public hearing on a new zoning ordinance by the Planning and Zoning Commission is set for Friday at 7 p.m. in the council chamber at city hall.
Gus Groos to be installed as president of the La Porte Bayshore Chamber of Commerce at the annual banquet. Friday evening at the Houston Yacht Club attendees will hear a speech by Danish Consul Bernhard Daugbjerg. Officers and banquet chairs are listed, with a social hour preceding the meal.
Jeft Dariene Diehl Patricia and Linde Smith lead a Saturday night concert with the Robert E. Lee Choir and the Houston Youth Symphony. They ran through the program with choir director Jerry Forderhase and an accompaniment of 36 musicians.
The University of Texas Men’s Glee Club with 40 voices will perform in concert at St Mark's Methodist Church in Baytown on Friday at 7 30 p.m. The program features Sundowners numbers and the vocalist Miss Vickie Hall. Free admission, nursery provided, audience invited, as the group tours Texas and neighboring states.
Officials of the Gulf Coast Industrial Workers Union and the Baytown Employes Federation with Baytown Refinery management announced a 2 cent hourly wage raise from 12 to 14 cents and a 13 dollar monthly rise from 21 to 24 dollars for salaried workers effective Jan 1 1967. A lump sum 12.50 was paid in lieu of retroactivity from Oct 16 1966, when a new contract was signed. The Gulf Coast Union represents about 2 000 workers at the Baytown Refinery.
Southern Pacific filed a petition in Judge Joe Ingraham's court seeking an injunction to halt the 2 Moose spur project from Baytown to the Cedar Bayou area near the U S Steel plant site. The move comes after a prior restraining order denial and an appeal to the New Orleans circuit court. Construction had begun near South Main Street in Baytown.
Highlands Bank elected two new directors including Andy Bargainer of Baytown, president of BEM Filter Inc., and Dr W L Hernder of Highlands, a longtime local dentist. Other officers and directors were reelected. a 10 percent stock dividend was approved following a 5 cent per share cash dividend in November 1966. Deposits rose sharply in 1966 with net profits around 85000 dollars. CHANNELVIEW BANK Three new advisory directors were named at Channelview State Bank and stockholders approved a 20 percent stock dividend, the bank’s highest.
Legislators planned a one day weekend retreat and early Monday return to town for 8 a.m. House Appropriations Committee meeting as the session nears. Senate Education Chair Criss Cole wants the committee to convene at 10 a.m. before the fall Senate opens in the third week of the 60th Legislature. Rep. W.5. Heatly of Paducah, chair of House Appropriations, said two bills HB75 and HB85 would be discussed, per Governor Connally’s emergency call.
A Baytown campaign opens Sunday to raise 50000 for a new Opportunity School and Workshop. Rev Burnette W Dowler chairs with Hazel Echols as campaign leader. Buses from Citizens National Bank will shuttle to the Houston Livestock Show on Feb 26 featuring Gomer Pyle, The Kids Next Door, and special seats at 3.50. The drive runs one week, aims at 50k, 44 percent of total project cost with federal aid expected for 56 percent, land on Baker Road west of Garth.
