King’s 1962 UT Austin stay in Quiet Room spotlighted
Martin Luther King Jr spent the night in UT Austin’s Quiet Room on the Texas Union fourth floor in March 1962 amid plans for a Driskill Hotel stay. UT officials feared public harassment, so King became the inaugural guest in a tiny space with a daybed and bathroom. He spoke at the Texas Union Ballroom to 1,200 attendees, urging nonviolent civil rights action and an end to segregated facilities.
