Sterling remained winless in district play as Port Arthur Memorial edged ahead 69 to 68 in a tight matchup. The game featured a late rally by Memorial and a narrow margin deciding the outcome.
Fast start by Lee's Lady Ganders yields early lead but Beaumont West Brook rallies to pull away late. Ganders struggle to maintain momentum as the district opener ends with West Brook securing the win and Lee's team looking to regroup.
A truck from an outside contractor struck an Exxon Mobil gas pipeline in West Baytown, causing a leak and forcing a road shutdown while emergency crews responded. Local authorities warned residents to avoid the area as crews worked to containing the leak and secure the pipeline.

U S Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board member John Bresland told Baytown Community Advisory Panel that BP’s culture of safety largely caused the March 23 2005 Texas City refinery explosion. He cited historical and plant specific failures contributing to 15 deaths and 170 injuries among contract workers.
Bresland former Honeywell risk manager described the Chemical Safety Board role in root-cause analysis and safety recommendations. CSB, a 1990 Congress authorized agency with about 50 staff, does not levy fines but analyzes incidents. A CSB video cites a distillation column filling with water during startup, faulty instrumentation delaying danger awareness and triggering an explosion.
The Smoke Free Baytown Coalition urged City Council to forbid smoking in all public buildings, work sites, restaurants and stores in Baytown, arguing for public health protection while noting existing bans in Austin and other cities. Supporters cite secondhand smoke risks. opponents question government reach over private businesses.
Baytown City Council will discuss placing amendments to the 58 year old charter on the May 13 ballot at a special meeting tonight. The charter, approved in 1948 after Goose Creek Pelly Baytown consolidation, has seen few amendments since. Last week the council rejected a total rewrite proposed by the Charter Review Committee.
Baytown City Council set 6 p m meeting at Council Chambers to discuss charter changes. A charter committee, formed in January 2004, was to propose limited changes but found substantive and housekeeping items needing revision before presenting amendments to voters.
Representatives from industry and government reviewed the draft of a document to improve communications during industrial events. The plan titled Communication of Industrial and other Significant Events emerged from two years of talks among Houston Ship Channel industries, Harris County and city officials under East Harris County Manufacturers Association. Maurice Watts of Exxon Mobil Baytown Refinery led the presentation and sought feedback from local industry reps.
