Lone Star Steel Co Non-Striker Killed

A. S. Blackburn, 27, a non-striking Lone Star Steel employee from Pittsburg East Texas, was shot to death while driving to work near FM 487 seven miles southeast of Pittsburg. The slaying followed a strike that began October 15 affecting Local 4134 members and non-union staff. Sheriff J L Morgan notes prior shootings at Blackburn home, ongoing plant violence, and stalled negotiations since January 10.

Funeral services were held for Henry A McNulty 86 of Port Arthur at St James Catholic Church with burial in Franklin La. The Baytown Jaycees announce their annual Distinguished Service Awards banquet at the Holiday Inn Friday during National Jaycee Week. Harris County District Attorney Carol S. Vance will speak. Prague student letter claims planned deaths to wake people

In Prague a student group issued what they said is a death by own action letter. The note declares volunteers will die one by one to awaken hopeless people after the Soviet invasion and names the writer as first to draw the lot. It predicts another death by own action would occur on Tuesday.

Baytown YMCA Starts Drive With Saturday Jog

The Baytown YMCA launches its annual membership drive with a four mile jog from the Wye Drive facility to City Hall Saturday. A police escort will accompany runners as Mayor Seaborn Cravey signs a proclamation at 3 15 p m after the kick off at 2 30 p m with seven runners leading the cross city dash along North Main Texas Avenue Market Street and to the city hall craved by the cross country group from the Y's three clubs the 100 mile 250 mile and 500 mile memberships.

LCB Agent to Crack Down on Young Drinkers

Baytown Texas Liquor Control Board agent Gilmer B. Perkins announced a tougher campaign against juvenile drinkers. He said youths could be jailed for possession or consumption with parents called, noting a state attorney general ruling allows prosecution in appropriate courts and segregation from adult offenders. The policy shift targets underage drinkers statewide.

Burglar Hurt In Break-In At AEL Rooms

Baytown police probe a break-in at Robert E. Lee High School with a wounded burglar. The intruder left a bloody footprint on a pool of his blood after breaking a small window on an upper floor and ransacking a trophy case and offices. Officers will contact area hospitals to trace treatment attempts. Police were alerted at 6 30 a.m. Friday by janitor Mrs Nikki Rylander.

Stratton retires from bank to focus on insurance role

J Brean Stratton leaves his post as vice president and trust officer of Citizens National Bank and Trust Co to continue serving Lincoln National Life policyholders from Houston. No Motive Yet Found In Case

Clyde Durbin Jr., 21, UT student, charged with murder in slayings of two university students John White of Corpus Christi and Keitha Morris of White Deer. White found shot and beaten January 8 in Bull Creek area near Austin. Morris body recovered the same day from Inks Lake. Sheriff Lang said motive not yet established. Durbin questioned for hours, arraigned in Travis County jail after statement. charges may be filed in Bastrop area.

Kiwanians Honor Armsworth With Distinguished Service Award

James A. Armsworth executive secretary of the Baytown YMCA received the Distinguished Service Award from Baytown Bryans Club President L J Really at a Thursday meeting. Reilly praised Armsworth for work with Kuwanis Club in Baytown and for serving Baytown youth through the YMCA. Armsworth will soon leave Baytown for a YMCA post in Kentucky.
