Cape Town Surgeon Has Next Patient
Cape Town surgeon Dr. Christiaan Barnard said the test candidate for a heart transplant at Groote Schuur Hospital is materializing but no definite decision has been made. He noted his second patient Dr. Philip Blaiberg is out of danger but at risk of infection and that the next transplant will not occur within six weeks due to a US trip. In Stanford, Mike Kasperak, 54, showed improvement on the critical list after receiving a heart from a 43-year-old woman, with normal blood pressure and no signs of rejection. Barnard plans an earlier Europe trip and hopes Blaiberg may go home mid February if progress continues.
