Explosions Rock Baytown Shell Complex and Fire aboard Freighter
A pair of disasters struck near Baytown as an explosion at the Shell Complex in Deer Park was followed by a collision involving a freighter and a line of gasoline barges on the Houston Ship Channel. Fire and smoke spread, alarms sounded, and emergency crews mobilized. Injuries were initially reported but later clarified as few, with hospital plans prepared for mass casualty if needed. The burning vessel Christian saw crew evacuations while captain and firefighters remained aboard. Coast Guard units and Baytown rescue craft searched waters as the barge string and tug Barbara Waxler aided, with the ship departing Galveston later that morning.
