Rites Tuesday For G J Poutra

Last-Minute Rush Expected for Poll Tax in Harris County

Tax Assessor-Collector Carl Smith predicts 300 000 to 325 000 Harris County residents will pay or seek exemptions this year with the Jan 31 deadline looming. Petition Calls for Blue Ribbon Grand Jury Probe

In Beaumont Jefferson County residents circulated petitions asking for a blue ribbon grand jury to investigate conditions. Rep Tom James of Dallas urged a mass meeting where about 2500 people supported petitioning for recall of county officers. No recall movement had begun at the Tate hearing. petitions were forwarded to the House General Investigating Committee of which James is vice chairman.

Drive For Bond Issue Scheduled

A citizens committee will back a $22 million bond issue to fund a new multi use Harris County sports stadium to secure the Houston National League franchise. Free Film On Cancer To Be Shown Jan. 24

A free film by the Harris County Unit of the American Cancer Society will be shown Tuesday Jan. 24 at 1 pm at the Brunson Theatre in Baytown. Time and Two Women tells the story of ten women with uterine cancer, the second most prevalent cancer among women. A Raytown doctors panel will answer audience questions after the screening. Chamber of Commerce Installation Tonight

Raxtown Chamber of Commerce will install officers and three new directors at 7 p.m. Monday during a dinner at the Robert E. Lee Cafeteria. J. Q. Mahaffey, editor of the Texarkan Gazette, will deliver the principal address as a nationally known editor and speaker. Robert L. Gillette will succeed Fred Martman as president on the 1961 Pulitzer Awards nominating committee. Special music for the dinner will be provided by Robert F. Lettris and Ralph Cain of Brookhaven.
