Final weekend for city ice rink starts tonight

The Town Square ice rink closes after this weekend with sessions 6 to 10 p.m. Friday Saturday and Sunday. Admission is 10 per person, 8 for children under 48 inches, with skates included. The rink marks the first community event in the new park built for the Christmas parade and tree lighting.

Goose Creek CISD Threat Goes Viral Across District

An early morning social media threat against Goose Creek CISD junior and senior highs caused many families to pull students from classes in a 23 000 student district. District officials and police searched the named campuses including Goose Creek Memorial High School Robert E Lee High School Sterling High School and several junior schools but found nothing suspicious. The district said the threat was not credible and classes continued as normal while authorities pursue the source of the post.

Baytown Martin Luther King Day March Draws Civic Activists

Boris Caldwell and his son William lead the annual Baytown Martin Luther King Jr Day march from Stephen F. Austin Elementary to Joel's Supermarket with a 2 PM start. A 1 PM prayer and voter registration drive accompany the event, inviting donations for Mission Baytown and underscoring civil rights history and community service.

Baytown approves Evergreen land sale for city park

Baytown City Council voted 6-0 to buy 118 acres of the Evergreen Golf Course for a city park not a golf course. The $2.7 million purchase includes the clubhouse and lot, with plans for a walking trail and a future master park plan in the south end near a new subdivision.

Chambers County VFDs lose funding over non profit status

Chambers County commissioners decided to withhold funding for Hankomer Wallisville and Oak Island Double Bayou volunteer fire departments after they lost their non profit status. The auditor flagged non compliance since funding agreements require nonprofit status and officials expect restoration of status to allow funding later in the year. Rusty Senac noted the departments are correcting paperwork to restore nonprofit status.
