Financier Estes Loses Appeal In Texas Case
A three man Texas Court of Criminal Appeals upheld eight year prison terms for J. Sal Estes, a West Texas financier. The ruling stated the highest Texas court can review criminal convictions, with Estes given 15 days to seek a rehearing. He was convicted on eight counts of felony theft from indictments dated April 25, 1962, tied to his Pecos headquarters and the collapse of his multimillion dollar financial structure. Estes, 38, previously living in Abilene, faces related mail fraud and conspiracy convictions in El Paso federal court with a 15 year sentence under appeal. The state argued publicity did not merit changing venue and no dissent was noted.
