Fire crews were dispatched to the 3000 block of Redell Road around 4:30 Tuesday for a grass fire but arrived to find a man burning trash behind a house. Attended church.
Local courts report a string of burglaries and vehicle thefts. Baytown police note tools, motorcycles, and a Datsun stolen from businesses and parking areas. New budget adds officers to serve civil papers and place deputies in residential areas to speed response and build local trust.
Conuwea reports football income totals showing district games brought in $127,602.35 with non district events lifting overall take. Sterling earned more from non district games than most district matchups with Galena Park and Westchester high among receipts. The smallest payout came from the Aldine game at $1,649.87.
A Baytown girl was injured Tuesday night when a car driven by Clinton L. Faught lost control on the perimeter road and struck a tree eight feet from the roadway. Passenger Carla Annette Woodward, 17, was taken to San Jacinto Methodist Hospital by Baytown Ambulance Service. Faught fled the scene but later turned himself in and was charged with negligent collision, failure to report an accident and failure to stop and give information.
A gasoline storage tank at the Texas City Refinery caught fire after being struck by lightning but was controlled by mid morning. Firefighters from nearby plants aided as crews battled the blaze amid heavy storms and hail. Damages and details on pay disputes and district service issues followed the fire report.

Secretary of State Mark White announced La say Beck Jr will serve as deputy director of the elections division. He will supervise attorneys and provide legal counsel, drawing on two years of statewide work with election officials and citizen groups on Texas election laws. Beck, a San Antonio native, earned biology and law degrees from Texas Southern University, graduating with honors and earning his JD in August 1972.
