President Admires Salinas Paintings in White House
Porfirio Salinas a self taught Texas artist paints to please people. Several of his oils hang in the White House, moved there by President Johnson and Mrs. Johnson. Salinas specializes in Texas landscapes and also paints animals and bullfights. He recalls meeting the Johnsons in 1960 and notes commissions were paid through intermediaries. One painting gifted to LBJ’s ranch features a valley and Pedernales River scene reminisant of hunting lodges. He says modern abstract art fails to convey exchange of ideas and prefers painting with reality.
