Truck Driver Rescues Four From West Main Fire
Baytown driver Bob Allison of Hasty Moving and Storage rescued four small children from a garage apartment on West Main as flames shot from the building. Fire marshal Bounds said a child reportedly lit paper near a gas burner, starting the blaze. Damage was estimated at $1,200 to the structure and $800 to personal effects. The homeowner, Mrs. C. Moody, reported to firefighters she had gone to the mailbox when the incident began.

Teens plan Blue Crutch Day as part of the March of Dimes drive with a Baytown Junior High committee setting up a booth at Houston Lighting and Power on Texas Avenue to solicit contributions and distribute blue crutches.

Johnson on tracks ends with chicken crash
In Houston a 40 year old Woodrow Johnson of Gardner La drove a panel truck loaded with chickens into a Southern Pacific freight train. The collision left 6008 pounds of chicken scattered 306 feet along the tracks. Johnson survived with a skinned knee and expressed concern about the chickens’ fate.

Eisenhower asks draft extension and expanded reserves
President Eisenhower urged Congress to extend the draft for four years and build a large reserve training system for men aged 17 to 38. Houston Jan 14 The trial of Merle Wayne Ellisor charged with killing State Patrolman Robert Crosby and injuring another officer could end by noon Thursday with two jurors to decide after final arguments.
