Birds Absent For Count At Houston Outdoor Club
The Houston Outdoor Nature Club held its annual Christmas bird count in rain and wind, yielding a record low 138 species since 1956 yet a high total of nearly two million birds sighted. A huge flock of red-winged blackbirds in Cove and 10,000 blue-billed Lesser Scaup boosted totals while species numbers lagged. The Baytown area remains a top birding region under Audubon and Fish and Wildlife Service study, with Texas coast species like reddish egret and fulvous tree duck noted. Brown pelican decline tied to pesticides and nesting loss. white pelican persists by nesting further north.
