Word From President Is Awaited
Washington AP The 88th Congress opens its second session amid political and economic tension as it awaits President Johnsons Wednesday night report on the state of the war in Vietnam. Leaders plan routine sessions, committees to notify the President, and swearing in of new members. Johnsons State of the Union address could shape Viet Nam peace talks and the Great Society program if the war continues or intensifies. A 30 day lull in bombing may extend through Jan 24, with Johnson facing whether to escalate or withdraw. If a request for a $13 billion war appropriation is anticipated, calls for cuts in other expenditures will grow. See Congress, Page 2.
