Ancient shipwreck off Turkey rewrites Bronze Age trade
A Turkish American team has been excavating a 150 foot deep shipwreck off southern Turkey for two years. They report a Greek vessel sunk near Cape Ulu Burun around 3,400 years ago with copper ingots, tin, pottery, and Cypriot and Canaanite artifacts. Led by Dr. George F. Bass, the find pushes Mediterranean shipbuilding back a millennium and reveals a vibrant Bronze Age trade network with eight heavy anchors aboard.
