Police hunt 17 year old Billy Boney after a bold hijack at the Western Union office Tuesday night. He threatened operator Laverta Bradley with a knife and escaped with $103 as officers trace dozens of windys and leads across Bay town.
Three top city leaders plus the city attorney traveled to Houston to discuss a potential out of court settlement with Mrs. Bessie Trifon and her lawyer. The dispute centers on drainage work across Trifon property on West Texas with years of back and forth offers about rerouting the ditch or laying sewer pipe.
Coach and Mrs Dan Stallworth and Taley Ann left Thursday for Waco to be with Stallworth's gravely ill father D W Stallworth after a heart attack Wednesday morning. A new spray on surgical dressing developed with the U S Air Force aero chemical laboratory and produced by Aeroplast Corporation of Dayton Ohio enables doctors to seal wounds without removing the dressing. The transparent Nexilite covers the wound and allows evaluation without disruption.
A Baytown labor dispute hearing by the National Labor Relations Board was postponed due to attorney illness. The session, moved to 10 am February 20 at the Baytown Community House, will rule on whether 167 Supervisors and Operators Association members may break from the Baytown Employes Federation and seek certification as part of management. Humble management maintains a penitent stance.
Baytown records show June in January yielding 73 as the day’s high while the first six days of the tenth run warm in the 70s. Nights cooled to near 38 with light frost, and Wednesday reached 73 though January 2 held the year’s warmest at 79.
LAWTON Okla Jan 7 UP The Army hunted Capt Harvey J Collins 28 of Tacoma Wash for stealing a plane and crash landing on a railroad track after leaving a note to his wife My darling wife I am going to die in the air like I want to The note was found in his car near the air field Collins is listed absent without leave at Fort Sill and was a student in an Army aviation tactics course The plane was found near Temple Okla and Collins was believed to be alive as helicopters searched Oklahoma and North Texas for him He reportedly was seen in a flying suit headed toward Walters Walters and vicinity were searched but no trace of leads or the missing captain existed days later
After 31 days, the body of 28 year old James Henderson was found floating near Redfish Reef in Galveston bay. Reichert’s body was found nearby the day after they were reported missing. Funeral services are planned in New Boston. Henderson’s death is ruled accidental drowning with survivors including his widow and two young sons.
Laytown hires Bass Sr as Houston Lighting and Power Co division manager. Bass, a Texas A&M graduate, joined in 1924 after six years as Rosenberg Western Division manager. He has led civic efforts in Rosenberg Fort Bend County and oversaw divisions including Wharton Freeport and Rosenberg. His son Nelson Bass serving in Germany with the Army and daughter Mya RG Bass reside with the family in Rosenberg.
A United Press survey of 22 markets indicates wholesale coffee could reach 12 to 15 cents for a cup and over a dollar per pound for high grade beans in many cities. Prices vary by region with some stores charging 9 to 30 cents for certain brands while wholesalers report rising costs over the past six months.
