Reports from across the United States note a weekend surge in violent deaths in Texas with eight traffic fatalities. A weak cold front moves through Texas while gold markets and oil talks dominate headlines from Washington to Denver.

Fred Hornberger formerly of Baytown rejoins The Sun advertising department after a three year absence in Beaumont. Engineers in Galveston publish a draft plan for maintenance dredging of Cedar Bayou to maintain a six mile 100 foot wide channel for 10 foot draft navigation. Dredging may raise turbidity and disturb marine life temporarily and open water disposal areas could become emergent, reducing future habitat. The draft statement will be reviewed by the Council on Environmental Quality and federal state and local agencies, citizens and groups.
The Goose Creek Bridge on West Texas Extension will rise to 16 feet above mean sea level, up from 9.8 feet, to improve stream flow. A. J. Busch says the low bridge limits flow. the east road will be raised to five feet. The 39 foot wide, concrete pavement project includes two traffic lanes and parking, with plans due by February and bids possible in March. Funding comes from the 1970 capital improvements program and abutting property assessments. Loop 201 will intersect and cross West Texas Extension.
Fire Station No 6 on the west end of Massey Tompkins Road nears completion and may open in early February. Only cabinet work remains and a materials delay has slowed progress. The station, contracted for 51 821, is financed mainly by band Sunds.
The column notes Sonny Enderli has retired from football after a stint at Cedar Bayou High and now works at Exxon. Mora remains at the tackle position, suggesting a shift from sports writing to on-field play as a preferred profession.
The Good Times in Baytown 1974 showed total building permits of 13 455 163 with October June April March and February over 1 million each. February alone surpassed 3 million while mobile home permits rose to 365 from 932 the prior year. New homes led with 4 568 603 in construction followed by apartments 3 201 000 and schools 2 935 256.
London papers cite Dublin sources claiming the Irish Republican Army offered to extend its Northern Ireland cease-fire indefinitely if Protestant groups negotiate. The plan seeks public British backing for talks between Catholic and Protestant extremists, not a British withdrawal. No militant response yet.
Seven California officials including five sheriffs retire briefly to collect both salary and pension from the same office. Monterey County Sheriff W A Davenport started the pattern earning 1500 monthly pension alongside 2400 salary, totaling 46 800 yearly. Officials say legal but critics seek to close the loophole. Governor Reagan questions the arrangement.
Tom Langford of the Harris County Flood Control Department says work on a North Main flood control ditch could begin within a couple of months funded by county bond money. The ditch, running parallel to North Main and crossing Massey Tompkins Road, will connect with a North Main culvert to ease rain runoff into Goose Creek.
Clear to partly cloudy through Tuesday with mild afternoons and cool nights. Baytown area forecast shows highs near 1:30 am and 7:28 pm with lows around 11:02 am and 10:23 pm. Weak notes indicate low tides and normal tidal changes.
South Vietnamese defenders in Phuoc Binh repelled a heavy North Vietnamese mortar and tank advance on the fifth day of fighting. In Cambodia, Khmer Rouge rockets struck Phnom Penh vicinity while government troops reportedly broke a blockade to aid a 400 man force on the Mekong east bank. Kunged fighting and near daybreak rocket barrages marked broader regional clashes as Saigon reported continued attacks and intact radio links from Phuoc Binh.
Donald Wayne Adams 22 of Highlands died in a traffic wreck on Interstate 10 near Channelview. Services set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church Highlands with burial in Memory Gardens Baytown. He is survived by his parents a brother and a sister and other relatives.
