Two Year Gulf OCAW Pact Targets New Wage Pattern

A F Grosphon, president of Oil Chemical and Atomic Workers Union, says a two year contract with Gulf Oil at Port Arthur Texas could set a pattern for about 400 OCAW contracts. The agreement for 3100 refinery workers raises wages and benefits by 44 cents an hour over two years and includes job security and a 60 day layoff notice. Overall about 60,000 OCAW covered workers stand to gain as negotiations continue with other oil firms.

The Baytown Sun will publish the city zoning ordinance proposed by the City Planning Commission in full. Baytown Marine Tolleson Wounded in Vietnam Action

Parents in Baytown learned from the Marine Commandant that Pvt. Danny J. Tolleson was wounded in Vietnam on December 28 near Quang Tri Province. He suffered fragmentation injuries to the left shoulder and legs, received care in Dai Nang station hospital, and was described as in good condition with excellent prognosis. Tolleson had sent letters home on December 25, 29, and 30, including news of shrapnel injuries and his Purple Heart award, and he had previously saved a fellow Marine by donating blood and was named Protestant Lay Leader for Headquarters Battery, 3rd Battalion, 12th Marines.

Baytown seeks federal aid for mental retardation center

A Baytown capital funds drive Jan 23–28 aims to raise 50000 to cover 44 percent of a new Baytown Opportunity Center for Mentally Retarded Children on Baker Road near Garth. Federal aid would supply the remaining 56 percent. committee leaders include Rev Burnett Dowler and Mrs Hazel Echols, with support from local groups and the United Fund.

Goose Creek Founder A. E. Kerr Dies At 90

A. E. Kerr 90 longtime Goose Creek founder and early associate of R. S. Sterling died in Houston on Wednesday. La Portians To Honor Gene Washington

Gene Washington, a former Baytown Carver star and a three time all stater, was due in La Porte at noon Thursday for a brief visit with family and friends after returning from the East West Shrine in Rome. A reception in his honor was planned from 4 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the new civic center in La Porte with Baytown friends invited.

Grass Fires Scorch 500 Acres Here

Grass fires swept Baytown on Wednesday with the largest blaze covering about 9300 acres from North Main to Holloway Addition on Bob Smith Road. Fire Chief Buddy McBride said sparks from trash likely started the fires, with at least 100 residents aiding firefighters before 5 pm. No injuries reported though livestock grazing posts were damaged and several structures avoided fire.
