A car struck a freight train at a grade crossing in dense fog near Tenas City on Tuesday injuring one man. The victim, Hiram William Brown part owner of Chapman Brown Lumber Co., was alone in the vehicle. Local officials reported extensive damage and ongoing investigation.
Mike Cuthbertson outlines next steps after a festive season digree joke. Barbara Rhodes reports a tedious call and initials puzzle involving a club member’s husband at the Sun. Billie Godwin drinks coffee instead of meals while Sherman Childres leads a Latin club committee. Mrs Frank Rembold skips classes in Junction to be with her daughter and new baby. Texas Rangers promised a full investigation after anonymous telephone calls warned Attorney General Joim Ben Shepperd and Raymond Brooks of a death threat. Gov. Allan Shivers ordered steps with local police and radio patrols as calls claimed to protest probes into the Veterans Land program and land affairs.

J W Gammel, football letterman and student council president, leads Gan ders. Misa Robert and Vee helm band. Runners up were Jima Jonesy and Glenn Watson.
Dag Hammarskjold arrived at Fao Liu on the Ching River and planned to proceed to Weiping on his mission to secure release of 41 imprisoned American airmen. He sent a message from Fran kow that all is well and remained overnight before departure.
Baytown area records show 1954 total rainfall of 29.46 inches, 18.3 inches below the 31 year normal. December brought only 1.37 inches, highlighting a dry year with record heat on July 9 reaching 97 degrees. Weather observer Chester Rogers notes continued warm, damp patterns and unusual low rainfall for the period.

Baytonians were asked Tuesday to donate to the March of Dimes for polio prevention. The January drive runs through Jan 31 with a Mothers March door to door that night. East Harris county coordinators Mrs. George Spangler and Wilton Roper organize. L. F. Kirksey leads Baytown efforts. Letters to residents go out Jan 15 with reply cards. donations drop in local containers. Proceeds target polio prevention.
The first semester in the Baytowary district ends January 20 with no formal mid year graduation. All teachers will have a one day holiday on Friday January 21 for a full day faculty training. Robert E. Lee High School leaves final exams to individual teachers and graduates of 1955 will receive diplomas in June.
A stork circling Raytown due to dense fog cannot land at San Jacinto Memorial Hospital Tuesday morning. Weather limits visibility, but the bird is expected to attempt a landing later today. A baby was born at the hospital since Sunday.
A Channelview man, enroute to Fort Hood with his wife and daughter to visit a son, was killed in an automobile crash near noon Monday in Roome Water. Jesse J. B. Van Buren Allinson, 58, died instantly. His wife, Meg, and daughter Miss Jaellie Atkins reached the hospital with injuries. Funeral services will be at Tidiam Chapel with Rev Kelso and Rev Morgan officiating. Burial at Sindacinka Park Cemetery. Surviving are his wife, two other daughters, three sons, two sisters, and two brothers.
The Goodfellows finalized their year showing seven hundred nine individuals aided by Christmas packages. Local stores donated toys and discounts while funds paid for safety pins, fruit, candy, and labels costing the party a total of 7493.04. Total collections reached 1310.64 and reserve interest of 842.01 was earned. The remaining sock balance with the Harris County Federal Savings and Loan Association is 1456.98.
Jubilant Democrats and less cheerful Republicans gathered at the Capitol to choose leaders for the Democratic controlled Congress which opens Wednesday. House Democrats to nominate Sam Rayburn as speaker and John McCormack as floor leader with a whip to be named. Republicans plan Senate nominations for minority leaders and President pro tempore. The formal elections occur Wednesday as party conferences set the stage for the new Congress.
A Baytown refinery employee, Cash, 46, died of a heart attack Monday after arriving at Haylawn hospital. Survived by widow Cixsie Cash, a son Cash Jr., and two grandchildren. four sisters and two brothers also listed. Funeral rites will be at CAFPartnng lodge No. 130 and Memorial Pedic cemetery in Channelview.
Vatican broadcast reports Pope Pius X has had hiccup relief after a night of suffering. Doctors warn rest is needed as the pontiff continues to perform more duties than advised, risking setbacks after his Dec. collapse. The papal physician emphasizes overwork could end his slow recovery.
A Highlands woman, Mrs. Like Johnson of 716 Janes Road, recovered her lost billfold after Ernest Rankin of La Parte mailed it from Baytown. The package went to Johnson’s old Houston address, then to her sister in Baytown, and the billfold with $68 arrived back in her hands on Tuesday.
