More than fifty tax office deputies will work this week in Baytown groceries stores banks and other central locations to issue poll tax receipts and exemptions. Carl Smith estimates over 400000 receipts and exemptions will be issued by Jan. 31 the poll tax deadline. Deputy start times vary with a complete list due next week. Persons aged 21 or older born after Jan 1 1961 are eligible for exemptions. Payment of the poll tax is required by law and penalties apply for voting in elections next year.

Mrs Julia M Joseph and Mrs Bennie Ma Tilton Williams 81 resident of Cove dies in Baytown hospital. Funeral by minister J R Williams and L Williams at Baytown Church of Christ officiated by Harmon. Burial Cedan Coast Cemetery follows at the Funeral Home Chapel. Survived by six daughters fifteen grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held for Doyle E. Ware Jr. 21 of TI Peggy at First Presbyterian Church in Houston. Officiating was Rev. Burnette W. Dowler. Burial followed at Cedar Crest Cemetery. Ware, a UT business major and Robert E. Lee High School graduate, died after a head injury from a fall at 122 Baker Road during a New Year’s Eve party. He is survived by his parents and a brother, all of Baytown, with grandmothers in Kingsville and Baytown.

Harris County Fresh Water Supply Districts No. 8 and No. 2 vote from 7 am to 1 pm Tuesday to elect officers. District No. 1 Highlands and No. 21 Channel View also set elections for next Tuesday. FWSD 8 seeks 12 candidates for 4 vacancies including incumbents Umholtz Clark and Tharp. New York City faced a major bus strike as two large private lines halted service, forcing 1.3 million riders to alternatives. Police reported little confusion and subway traffic rose, with more cars and longer Midtown queues as riders shifted to cars or car pools amid a light snow. The New Year holiday spike pushed total deaths from traffic, fires, and miscellaneous causes to 477. Traffic fatalities reached 335 by midnight, with 8 fire deaths and 59 miscellaneous deaths. A general cargo ship Catalian S reported drifting without power in the Gulf of Mexico about 150 miles west of St. Petersburg Florida. A Coast Guard plane located the vessel and a commercial ship Trish Ash was sent to assist. the Catalian is a 407 ton Tasmanian registry vessel with no disclosed destination.
Baytown area residents are urged to cooperate as the annual census begins in January. Census takers will collect only family size and names of children up to age 18, with no personal questions. Data helps project future school needs and supports local organizations and utilities.
Opportunity School in Baytown holds its annual meeting at 7 30 pm Thursday at the Baytown Chamber of Commerce with B Harper presiding. Three new board members will be elected to fill terms of Don Teter Mrs M W Harper and Mrs Krox Beavers. A 1961 work report will be presented and the public is invited. United Fund contributors are eligible to vote. Nominations from the floor may be taken.
