Burnet the accidental president of Texas Republic

David G. Burnet of Lynchburg became Texas Republic’s first president after a March 1836 push to gain mercy for two condemned men, John and William Smith. He rode to Washington-on-the-Brazos, secured a 30 day stay of execution, and served as interim president until Sam Houston’s term began. Burnet later acted as vice president under Mirabeau Lamar and again as president during Lamar’s illness.
