The Pilot Club of Baytown will host its seventh annual barbecue fundraiser today at Grace United Methodist Church. The event promises more than just food with additional activities and community involvement.

Goose Creek trustees approve naming the district’s 14th elementary school Victoria Walker Elementary by a 4 to 3 vote. The late Cedar Bayou teacher supported black students’ education, started the school’s first band and choir, and often funded activities. Opponents preferred reviving the former school name.
Mont Belvieu City Council tabled action on an ordinance requiring all vehicles transporting garbage to cover loads to keep debris off roadways. Officials cited state law gaps, with concerns about enforcement and practical exceptions like tree branches, and an amnesty period for enforcement was proposed.
Deputies in Chambers County continue to seek leads in the January 21 death of 21 year old Hector Cornejo found along Kendall Road near Mont Belvieu. Sheriff Joe LaRive says investigators have few solid tips and remain unsure if the killing was random or targeted. Cornejo, an El Salvador native and former Robert E. Lee High School soccer standout, was last seen around 2:30 p.m. before his body was found via a passing motorist and pronounced dead at 11 p.m. Police have not released information on possible stolen items or a motive. The case remains active with ongoing follow ups and requests for tips.
