Daily News Tribune remembers Sparky Bond editing in the 1930s
In the 1930s Clifford M Sparky Bond published the Daily News-Tribune on North Main with a UPI wire service and a 40 cent monthly or five dollar yearly rate. The paper noted Bond’s role in hiring Fred Hartman, the 1939 issue mentions Elliott Roosevelt backing Garner, and reports on local politics, chicken theft arrests, and sports from Cedar Bayou, Lee High, and REL. Ches Rogers columns reference Goose Creek ISD’s first superintendent J F Crawford and a growing mascot for the Gander Club amid editorial critiques of Gov O Daniel’s hillbilly music broadcasts. The piece ends noting an unsigned editorial on the Governor’s Mansion broadcast.
