West Baytown Girl Scouts hold a Songfest at the Community Building, 7 30 p m Friday. Mrs Benny Beck will award patches to all girls who sell 72 boxes or more of Girl Scout Cookies during the program.
Bethel Mission at 425 W Main will host Rev. J W Watson as guest speaker with services at 7 p m on Saturday and 10 a m Sunday. Additional details unclear due to OCR.
Chub will hold a western dance from 6 30 p m to 2 a m Saturday at Charles Sue s Barn on Wallis ville Road.
MARSHALL and FLIPPO of Abiene will call a square dance at the Harvest Club in Beaumont from 8 to 11 pm on March 3. Tickets are $2 per person and Baytown dancers are invited. A University of Miami scientist says desert dust blown across the Atlantic could influence hurricane formation in the Americas. In another item, a collision between a freighter and an oil barge near Jacksonville spilled about 7,000 gallons of oil into the St Johns River.
Harris County Commissioners Court agreed to take over all water and air pollution operations now run by the City of Houston. Commissioner Ramsey announced the county would accept Mayor Welch's offer to transfer control without raising taxes and invited other municipalities such as Baytown to join. County Judge Elliott was absent during the meeting.
Wanda Orton reports Robert Wills Anders, a 28 year old SHSU computer system manager, will become Lee College data processing center manager beginning March 1 at an annual salary of 16000. Regents approved the hire to convert to a One 360 system with streaming next fall under Dr. Richard Strahan.
The Lae College Foundation Board reports 22 523 40 in cash and pledges toward a 5200 000 goal, with a 2 000 from First National Bank and a 2 000 pledge to follow. Trustees aim to reach 50 000 in two years as they expand the endowment. Dr Strahan notes 130 contributors and flexible gifts including cash, securities, bonds, real estate, and deferred giving via life insurance or wills.
1966 REL graduates Raymond Pierce Swofford and Elise Howell were chosen as Wandrow Wilson Fellows for future college teachers. Swofford, valedictorian and German major at Rice, studied in Germany under AFS and spent a junior year in Munich through Wayne University. Howell, a University of Arkansas student in comparative literature, was first chair oboist at Robert E. Lee and helped in the 1945 Bay City Symphony trip to Germany’s Warner Bayreuth Festival.
Baytown City Council ordered all parking meters removed for at least 60 days starting Monday. City workmen will detach meter heads and store them. remaining meters will not operate. The move, supported by Brunson Theater manager Rufus Honeycutt, cuts about 28,000 dollars annual revenue and ends a long local debate. (Meter action referenced on Page 2)
The REL Latin Group at Robert E. Lee High School hosts the first Gulf Coast Classical Convention from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday with 25 Gulf Coast high schools participating.
