Baytown teacher William Glenn Smith 23 of 113 Kelly Lane filed Tuesday to run for Baytown District 6 council seat. He teaches at Cedar Bayou Junior School with wife Karen teaching at Baytown Junior School. Smith, born in Baytown and trained in Beaumont schools, holds a BA in government from Lamar State College of Technology and is pursuing an MA in government. His grandfather chaired the 1948 Baytown City Charter committee. his Beaumont-born uncle Will L. Smith is a Texas House dean. He aims to bring common sense to city government and engage residents in public service. He hunts and fishes and attends a Methodist church with no other national or local teaching affiliations.
Jerusalem AP reports Prime Minister Levi Eshkol died of a heart attack at his home in Jerusalem at 8 15 am. He led Israel since 1963 and steered the 1967 war. Deputy Yigal Allon possibly to take over, with Dayan rivaling him amid Arab attacks and wary allies. Eshkol had recovered from prior pneumonia and chaired a cabinet committee the day before his death. Four daughters survived. wife at bedside. Al Fatah claimed responsibility from Damascus, denied by Israeli foreign ministry.
The Channelview School Board passed a resolution to expel any student possessing narcotics or using drugs without a prescription. Atty. Gen. Crawford Martin's ruling prompted the move, and trustees debated policies on expulsion for students arrested on felony charges. No action on that proposal.
Lionel Fontenot 28 of Barrett Station was shot and killed Tuesday by State Highway Patrolman James Williams near Barrett Station on the Crosby Lynchburg Road during a vehicle stop in dense fog. Fontenot allegedly drew a knife, advanced on the officer, and Williams fired. Fontenot died at Gulf Coast Hospital at 10 am. The DPS is investigating the shooting.
Highlands community announces a plan to field a candidate for the next school board election. A petition with 819 signatures protests pairing Highlands Elementary with Harlem Elementary, opposes mandatory busing, and asserts the Civil Rights Act does not require pupil transfers to balance race.
Bids on the new Pumphrey Elementary School are expected about March 10. Architect James A. Davis outlined the site between Baker Road and Fairway Drive near Country Club Oaks and Craigmont. The one story building will span 40,000 square feet with 22 classrooms and a kindergarten area, plus an auditorium and media center. Estimated cost is 552,500 with completion aimed for January 1970, though board members voiced concern over delays and bidding dates.
President Nixon won West Germany's approval for planned Moscow talks and assured Chancellor Kiesinger the United States will back Berlin negotiations. A German spokesman said Nixon told Kiesinger his Thursday trip to West Berlin is not a provocation but a show of support for Berlin. He also touched on Germany's disputed presidential election and the Franco British tension over the Common Market and NATO.
