County Commissioner W Y Ramsey said Tuesday that improvements along Bayway Drive would be part of a proposed Harris County bond issue tentatively planned for 1967. He noted that East Harris County projects are under review as part of the broader funding package.
Harris County voters approved 60.8 million dollars in bonds on January 3 to fund road construction, including NASA area projects. The sale of bonds is planned for June with all issues expected to be sold by 1965. County Auditor S. B. Bruce says financing more bonds would likely raise the county tax rate.
A Baytown Senior Citizens Club meeting at 2 p m Thursday at St Mark's Methodist Church will feature a Social Security official explaining Medicare. All residents aged over 65 are invited to attend.
Tuesday morning two candidates joined David Tracht and James M Black Jr in filing for ballot spots on the Lee College board of regents. Black already serves as assistant secretary and joins Alma McNulty and Warren Spivey as contenders in the April 2 election. Black, a Purdue graduate and Baytown resident, is manager of Marbon Chemical Co. and active in community groups, while Tracht of Fort Worth origin has spent 27 years in Baytown and works at Humble Baytown Refinery.
Thousands of American troops pressed into South Vietnam on two fronts as B52 bombers softened Viet Cong defenses near Bong Son and along Route 1. The 1st Cavalry Airmobile reported 38 Viet Cong killed, totaling 1,130 since January 25. The 1st Infantry Division pushed into the mastiff operation area 35 miles northwest of Saigon, facing scattered Viet Cong resistance but possible major action. Air Force and Navy jets pounded Dien Bien Phu approaches, bridges, and storage sites while ground ambushes along Route 1 caused heavy tolls on both sides.
Lee College faces no vacancies from morning to midafternoon and operates at 86 percent occupancy in junior college classrooms.
