Washington reports that the Democratic controlled House will vote a cut in income taxes this week despite administration protests. Predictions come from both Democrats backing the measure and several Republican opponents. Rep. Robert W. Kean warns the bill faces slim chances of defeat in the House.
La Porte hosts Frontier day events with a downtown parade at 4 80 p m and a barn dance at 7 30 p m at the Community House on San Jacinto. The day is proclaimed by Mayor Burgin with a parade through Highway 144 and Spencer highway featuring floats, wagons, horse tack, and a cake Biesty reading the parade. Arrangements chairmen invite participation from Seabrook, Lomax, Le Porte, Haytown, Golden Acres and Gakhhurst, with a 3 30 p m assembling time. Proceeds fund the senior trip. attire is blue gingham. dance admission is 50 cents a couple or 35 cents a single.

Atomic Energy Commission detonated the second 1955 test shot atop Yucca Flat near Las Vegas. The explosion, rated nine to twenty thousand tons of TNT, produced a half mile fireball and mushroom cloud visible in Las Vegas and as far as Los Angeles San Francisco and Oakland. Ground damage details were unclear as dust blankets formed after tower shots. The 33rd Nevada test and 34th continental US shot occurred exactly at 7 45 am est.
Temperatures linger in the 30s with 33 in Baytown and Amarillo reporting 1 degree in the past day. A sharp warmup is expected before another frigid front moves in late Wednesday. Rainfall totals reach 1.05 inches as Houston area remains cold under wet winds. The US Weather Bureau notes a slow warming trend from West Texas spreading east.
Two men cut and stabbed themselves in a tavern brawl on Market Street Road. Officers found them bleeding from near-fatal wounds, but witnesses say they declared friendship and vowed to shake hands and forget the fight. They were treated and left the hospital together.
A well-dressed hijacker robbed Western Union at 4 North Ashbel of more than $190 Monday night, driving away in a black 1950 Ford while a witness 20 feet away ignored the crime. Police traced a suspect through roadblocks but he remained at large Tuesday. Clerk Clarissa McMillan reported the pistol threat at 7 10 p.m. and said a second man sat in the car during the robbery.
Police held six suspects after an autopsy found the beaten, frozen body of Joe McLeod in his Amarillo home. Drinking companions described as involved were held for questioning while authorities continued the probe into the fatal incident.
David Lewis of Deer Park Cub Scout Pack 268 received the Webelos Award at the pack’s annual Blue and Gold banquet held Monday night in the San Jacinto Elementary gym. Gary Dickerson earned the Wolf badge and 14 Bobcat pins were awarded. Twenty two boys received registration cards. Faye Hillard from the San Jacinto Scout office attended as a guest. Cubmaster L I Jelly led the Bobcat ceremony with support from parents and other guests.
The Baytown Chamber of Commerce highway committee backs an enlarged program of road improvements in Chambers County and Baytown. Planned works include a Cedar Bayou bridge, Market Street widening, North Highway 73 extension, Baker and Iron Market surfacing, and Highway 78 progress with state officials to be invited as the plan proceeds.
Nationalist air and naval forces repelled a Communist attack near Nanchi Island, sinking several gunboats and disrupting enemy concentrations at Pishan and Fleilung-islands. Troop movements and air strikes continued as authorities warned the war was on for Nanchi, with limited confirmation from U S and Allied spokesmen.
Harris County commissioners court bought nine acres of the former St. Marys Catholic seminary at La Porte to add to Sylvan Beach park. The purchase order was approved Monday. The county paid for the land as part of its park expansion plan.

The measure faced a week’s delay. similar Senate finance bills propose a 160 million bond ceiling. A committee approved a bid to bar cross nomination by parties, sparking further action.
Lois Ruth Ferrell, a Baytown woman visiting a Horaton home, was seriously wounded when an antique pistol discharged by accident while she examined a gun collection. She was reported improved and receiving treatment in Houston.
A 16 year old, Beyear-ald, claimed to have left school to support his family shot Edward Ray Swilley 22 caliber rifle through the heart at 11330 Pan. The boy, Eugene Sutton, was released to an uncle and no charges were filed after his statement. Justice Walter Queen has not reached a verdict but doubts charges will be filed.
Law College invites Lee students to submit a questionnaire to indicate summer session course preferences. Forms are available at the college office and by mail on request. responses guide which courses and schedules will be offered. Summer runs June 1 to July 19 and July 20 to Aug 8, with classes 8 am to 4 pm. students may take up to two courses for seven semester hours per six weeks.
The Baytown Library drive totals $539 as collections continue through the month. Drive Chairman John W. Strickler urges solicitors to finish calls soon and invites donations to Friends of the Baytown Library Box 83.
A burglar broke a pane at Mitchell's drive-in grocery on Highway 148, removed glass fragments, and cleaned molding to crawl through. He fled empty handed after Mitchell Rossiner reported nothing missing and no entry made.
