In February The Sun continues a series recognizing African American pioneers in Baytown history. Ernest Alvin Archin, born 1887 near Hempstead, advanced education and administration in Texas schools, earning a BA in 1908 and an MA later at Prairie View. Known as Professor, he joined the local education system after nineteen years in teaching and administration.
Small business owners can learn practical skills and gain access to funding and growth tools through Goldman Sachs 10 000 Small Businesses. Houston Community College administrator Maya Durnovo explains the program offers a comprehensive, customized experience to help mom and pop shops compete with larger firms. The program runs 11 sessions, meeting Fridays and Saturdays, and requires commitment.
Community talks with Cedar Crossing pipe finishing plant show progress. TMK IPSCO plant manager Charlie Canatella says the firm will install sound curtains to reduce noise from main finishing buildings, a major disturbance cited by residents. Jerry Jones of Friends of Cedar Bayou United welcomed the plan after discussions on Friday.
The Cedar Bayou Navigation District approved a 5000 grant to the Chambers Recovery Team ChaRT for Ike recovery projects including nature tourism.
