The Lady Bulldogs prepare for Hightower following a 48 to 44 victory over South Houston. Saint Joseph Regional Catholic School honors four pastors in a separate note on page two.
Joe Villarreal, general manager of Joe V s stores, spoke to the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Greater Baytown about a new grocery concept. The chain now has five stores and aims to price 15 percent lower than the cheapest competitor while meeting H E B standards on pay and benefits. He noted the Baytown location’s history in his career.
Baytown police sold out of chocolate covered strawberries during a Valentine fundraiser for the Blue Santa program. Detective Nathan Gallop notes the event was especially successful, with 3,000 strawberries sold in a day and a half, faster than last year. The goal is 4,000 next year as the program supplies Toys for children in need.
Goose Creek CISD trustees voted 5-1 to adopt new single-member district boundaries. District officials said the maps must be sent to the Justice Department for final approval. Sampson objected, noting he remains unhappy with District 1’s ratio as population shifts are shown. The changes adjust district populations from nine to fourteen thousand in several districts. The board also approved the 2012-13 instructional calendar.
Dennis Heyen welcomed a 4-0 Chambers County vote to rename South Greenwood Street and West Greenwood Street to South Oscar Nelson Jr. Drive and Oscar Nelson Jr. Drive. Greenwood Street cuts through a residential area while E Greenwood Street runs the Cedar Crossing Industrial Park, home to Wal Mart and Home Depot warehouses. The industrial park houses aerospace and distribution tenants, and drivers fear the turns near homes pose danger to children. Heyen urged the change after years of near misses and traffic. Dorothy Strouhal of Cove debuts on Worst Cooks in America season three on Food Network. She survives the first week after serving a four eggs plate and orange cinnamon pancakes to coach Anne Burrell. She notes editors kept some moments but spared a full meltdown.
