London February 1 United Press reports Soviet planners seek automatic production to close the gap with the West. Automation advances push-button factories for basic materials, target years 1950–95 with sharp growth in pig iron, steel, coal, and electricity, and comparison to Western outputs. The plan foresees 70 percent industrial growth by 1955 from 1950 levels, with notable automation at Stalin Automobile Works and Gorki tractor plant.

La Porte city commission plans a Saturday bid opening for a 12000 remodeling project to convert the old Post Office into a new city hall. Final approval by the city commission is expected during the week, with inside work including a customer counter, restrooms, lighting, and all new electrical and plumbing.

Sun Spots Released From Army and City Recreation Post Change

Sun Spots, son of Eugene and Mrs. Santana, recently discharged from active duty at Camp Atterbury after serving as a clerk in the Tabst rdnance Detachment, 355th Regiment. C. D. Middleton, the City Manager, signaled reluctance to accept his post representing Baytown on the Recreation Council, with Middleton noting he would replace W. M. RNoytes and hoped another candidate would be suitable. Officials also discussed ordinance amendments and a request for a regular fee tied to East Wishia Highway 14, which was turned down.

Three Escape Death In 2 Wrecks Ditch On Highway Traps Two Automobiles

Two men narrowly escaped drowning and a third was seriously injured when their cars plunged into a 28 foot gully at the intersection of Highways 73 and 146 in Chambers county Saturday morning. William King 20 of Mont Belvieu and Grady Fancher 38 of Baytown plus Bert Williams 38 of Baytown were involved. King was hospitalized with chest and possible internal injuries after his car fell 25 feet down an embankment. Fancher sustained non serious injuries and Williams disappeared, later found wandering toward Mont Belvieu, believed to be seeking help. The gully was dry at first but flood waters rose by 10 a.m. and the wrecks blocked the road amid heavy rains. See Wrecks- Page Two.

Allied Forces Break Chinese Trap On Old Baldy Mountain

In Korea near Old Baldy Mountain Allied infantry and heavy artillery fought a five hour battle against Chinese forces, inflicting around 70 Reds wounded as the assault was repulsed. Repeated reinforcements were blocked while air units claimed several MiG-15s in the Yalu area.

Pope Plea on Rosenbergs Suppressed for White House

A letter from Pope Pius XII appeal for clemency for Julius and Ethel Rosenberg was not transmitted to the White House by the Justice Department. Emanuel H. Bloch, attorney for the Rosenbergs, demanded a full investigation into why the pope's plea, disclosed Friday, was not shared with Eisenhower or Truman. Tillie Johnson, longtime Goose Creek Independent School District employee, died Friday after a lengthy illness from pneumonia.
