Baytown School trustees meet at 4 45 p m Thursday to study Architest Dan Perkins ideas on cutting costs for Highlands and Lamar additions. Bids from Moore and Moore of La Porte exceed estimates by about 30000, not including architectural fees. Superintendent Gentry reports 40525773 spent or committed of a 1 million bond issue with 59474227 remaining as planned projects and site improvements proceed.
Residential construction in Baytown rose to near record levels in January with 49 permits issued at city hall. Tax official C.E. Hanratty called January among the city's busiest months, noting 39 permits for Fair Park addition and 10 citywide. One home near the 17,000 mark to be built by Ef. B. Fulmer at 1400 North Commerce. Construction costs totaled 522,090 of 791,480 in permits. December had 7 permits and 141,000 cost. Three commercial permits added 15,000, including A. B. Jones drive inn grocery at 201 S 4th, ER. A. Berry welding shop at 2215 Highway 146, and a small North Main restaurant. Grace Methodist church sanctuary on Pruitt cost 194,350. six garages 6,700. 11 additions and repairs 2,340. No permits issued in January.
City Council will meet Thursday night to decide if North Main from Lee Drive to Goose Creek should be 30 or 36 feet wide. The section will be repaired soon and new sewer lines to the disposal plant were recently installed nearby. City Manager C Darwin Middleton noted the meeting may be brief unless issues arise. The council will also address the water well situation on Nazra Street where a dry well exists and consider an appropriation ordinance and surplus funds on time deposit. A citizens committee plans to present before the council.
The Texas Senate considered a state level Taft-Hartley act to resolve labor disputes like the Port Arthur strike. Sen. William H. Shireman of Corpus Christi introduced the measure aiming to curb manhour faced picketing and off strike stales. The Senate adjourned after a brief session while the House approved several measures including banks observing a five day work week. Rep. Yorn King of Dallas sponsored the bill.
Two Highlands men and an 18 year old woman suffered serious injuries when their car, estimated at 90 mph, overturned on a curve on Croaby Lynchburg Road between Highlands and Four Corners. Travis O Neal, 27, with a broken back, was taken to Jefferson Davis hospital after emergency care at San Jackson Memorial. Charles Barham, 19, and Geneva Stephens, 18, were treated at San Jackson Memorial and Earthman Memorial hospitals for multiple injuries. Mrs. Stephens said the car skidded 546 feet after braking hard as they rounded the curve. Joe Watson, sheriff's deputy investigator, said the car left the road into a ditch. Barham works aboard a Horton and Horton tugboat.

The Roy Chit garage apartment at the corner of Crawroad Mapleton in Brownwood addition was heavily damaged by fire Tuesday afternoon. Estimated damage ranged from 2009 to 3400 pounds. Furnishings inside the home were burned. Volunteer firemen from Wositr Fire Department were unable to approach the flames inside the building. Firemen believe the blaze started in the garage.
