School Tax Collections Total Nearly 7 Million

The school district reported tax collections near 6.97 million by January 31, up about 1.48 million from 1968. Tax roll delinquency rose slightly to 96.58 percent from 96.93, with a goal of 98 by July. Lee College taxes totaled 962,254.13, while Baytown figures were not yet available.

Pigeon Drop Swindle Targets Shopper at Henke's

A $620 loss amid a staged pigeon drop swindle is reported after a shopper at Henke's was approached by four Black women who claimed to have money and invited her to help deposit it. The suspects produced fake currency and envelopes claiming large sums, while the victim believed they were aiding a money transfer. Police were alerted and the incident references a page 2 continuation.

Baylor Club Meeting Is Set Friday

The Baytown Baylor Club will hold a founders day meeting at 4:30 p.m. Friday in Wyatt's Cafeteria Lee Room with Dr. George Stokes as speaker. Baytown Chamber Seeks Board Nominations for Three-Year Terms

Nominations for the Baytown Chamber of Commerce board of directors to serve three-year terms will be sought from members. The process begins with mailing the roster and asking each member to nominate one candidate for the board alongside 20 holdovers. Ballots are due Feb. 13 with a Feb. 17 mailing of finalized ballots to members.

Houston Rites For Louis Pearce Sr

Funeral services were held for Louis M. Pearce Sr. 80 of Houston with Pearce Street in Baytown named after his family. Pearce died Thursday following a career in oil field supply and later leadership roles at Texas Iron Works and iWaukesha Pearce Industries. He is survived by his wife and son Louis M. Pearce Jr., former president of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Services were at George H. Lewis and Sons Sage Road Chapel and burial followed at Forest Park Westheimer.

Baytown Phone Company Announces $2 Million Budget Plan

General Telephone Co. assigns 1970 to 2 million dollars in Baytown division construction and facility expansion. A. M. Chappell, division manager, spoke at the Baytown Chamber lunch detailing 10 year growth forecasts, toll free connectivity, and touch tone calling by 1972. He noted a 150 percent service increase by 1980 and new rate options including cheaper late night calls.

Kloesel Cannon Seek Reelection In Baytown City Race

Baytown councilmen Ted Kloesel and Allen Cannon seek new terms in the April 7 city elections for Districts 1 and 5 respectively. Leonard Stasney, District 4 incumbent, has not announced or filed. Cannon works at Sinclair Of Co plant in Channelview and lives at 1601 Donovan with his wife and four children. both are graduates of Robert E. Lee High School and Houston University alum Cannon earned a BBA in 1958.

Boy Did Mr Chappell Get A Wrong Number
