Constable Credits Deputies in Grime Cut as Crime Falls

Harris County Sheriff Jack Heard credits sheriff's operations for a 3.4 percent decrease in crimes in unincorporated areas in 1976. Constable James Douglas argues deputies contributed to the drop, citing decentralization, a crime control unit, and citizen cooperation as key factors. Homicides rose 30 percent to 56. rapes up 83 percent to 86. assaults up 52 percent to 824. robberies down 2.3 percent to 464. burglaries up 2.8 percent to 5,058. larceny and thefts down 12 percent to 6,984. auto theft down 2.3 percent to 1,847.

Black guerrillas killed seven white Roman Catholic missionaries, including four nuns, at Musami Mission 36 miles north of Salisbury. Pope Paul VI voiced profound grief. Proposed Change In House Joe Says He'll Favor Bill To Legalize Bingo

State Rep. Joe Allen of Baytown says he will support a bill to legalize bingo if confined to charitable and non profit groups. The bill, from Sen. Lom bardino, would allow bingo and raffles at one location by non profits or charities. Allen notes past efforts and Baytown senior citizens want bingo, citing Bayshore Rod Reel and Gun Club history with raids and public concerns. If passed, the Bayshore club may again sponsor games benefiting local causes.

Two Shifts In Operation City Police Ride Along Program

Baytown launches an adult ride along program from Feb 18 allowing any resident to observe officers on Friday or Saturday nights. Three CPU officers will host two shifts 6–10 pm and 10 pm–2 am with advance reservations and liability waivers. Baytown will activate a new telephone exchange on February 19 adding the 428 prefix. Some numbers will be assigned at random starting February 21. Baytown now has three exchanges 422 424 and 427 with toll free dialing to Houston central zone and calls to nearby towns without long distance charges.

Chambers Man Believed Killed by Arrow in Freak Incident

An Anahuac area man, 23 year old Troy Lynn Odom, died after an arrow struck him between the eyes while he waited behind a target near a Monroe City residence. Sheriff Pounds calls it a freak happening and no charges are filed as the investigation continues.
