Armed Forces Enlistments Jump in January Report

School tax revenues hit record high in Baytown
Baytown school district taxpayers met the January 31 deadline with a record payment rate of 96.52 percent, up from 96.38 percent last year. Man Knifed At Friendly Party Near Channelview
A Baytown man, Jimmie Armstrong, 43, lay near death from stab wounds after a friendly drinking party near Channelview ended in a fight. Charley F Huntley, 46, a Kellogg Construction insulator, posted bond and was released on assault to murder charges. The three couples had known each other for years. Armstrong was stabbed in the back and arm during an argument about Army exploits.

Shepperd Seeks Recovery Of $500,000 In Land Deal
Attorney General John Ben Shepperd filed two suits on behalf of the Veterans Land Board seeking recovery of about $500,000 paid in land purchases. Defendants include L W Ruffin RB Sheffield J Hall Little G Curtis Jackson Jr and H R Stallings all of Crystal City and Brady. The suits allege fraudulent representations and conspired efforts to defeat the veterans land act with Kinmey County and Zavala County properties involved. The suits name all veterans as necessary parties but seek no recovery from them. The office says the program is a trust fund to repay veterans for military service.
