Houston to expand downtown video surveillance with 180 new cameras
Houston police will expand downtown video surveillance to nearly 1000 feeds by early 2014 with 180 additional cameras. The system, funded mainly by federal money, covers public areas including the theater district and stadiums, and relies on private network sharing for broader coverage. Local officials defend the move amid mixed studies on effectiveness and note the need for human policing alongside tech.
