This Was The Year In Hollywood Of Ratings And Fees
Hollywood saw Cary Grant accused by his wife of beating her on LSD trips yet remain wildly popular. Jack Valenti set a movie rating system as producers chased X pictures for adult appeal. Barbra Streisand joined a million dollars per picture club, alongside Newman, Streisand, Andrews, Marvin, and Taylor. Assassinations spurred soul-searching on screen violence, nudity hit new lows, and Barbra Streisand’s husband fueled press frictions. Lucille Ball hired her children. Katharine Hepburn won another Oscar after 35 years. Sinatra and Fisher split, and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis dominated covers while Zsa Zsa Gabor lampooned hotelkeepers. 1969 loomed, with Hollywood clutching notoriety, money, and scandal.
