Washington dispatch on United States espionage history urges tighter federal laws. Justice officials say the past thirty years of Red spying were shameful and seek two new measures to combat spies. They want wire tap evidence admissible in espionage trials and immunity for informants. Only nine have been convicted of espionage despite hundreds linked to the Red network.
Ross Hurst of Flat Rock recalls Christmas morning fire that killed wife Mary Hurst and four children Patrick 6 Hazel 5 Michael 2 Daniel 9 months two miles east of town. He and Francis Eyster shared the home. Eyster saw flames from kitchen as the family fled to stairs. Mary returned to save children but perished with the others. only Ross survived in pajama-clad snow outside.
Glenn's Food Market was burglarized on Christmas Eve and night. Police Chief H. E. B. McKee said a back door to the private office was forced open and about 70 to 100 dollars vanished. Co-owner David Glenn estimated around 200 dollars missing. Thieves broke a back window tore off a screen and scattered papers. nothing else appeared stolen.
Funeral services for Dr Alvis Cibulka, age 69, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Paul A. Lee funeral home with Rev P Walter Henckell officiating. Burial in San Jacinto Memorial Cemetery. He died December 3 at General Hospital in Los Angeles. A Highlands resident for 25 years, he formerly worked in Humble Oil and Refining Co engineering and taught at the University of Texas and University of Houston. Survivors: widow Antoinette Cibulka of Highlands, two daughters Mrs Roy P. Dwyer of Ruston Louisiana and Miss Ian Cibulka of Houston, three grandchildren, two sisters, one brother. Donations to American Cancer Society preferred. Mail checks to Dr George Bruce 712 East Texas, Baytown Cancer Society chair.
Mrs. Ervin R. Prinzel of Tri City Beach road was injured Christmas Eve when her husband lost control near the interurban track on South Pruett. She suffered a fractured cheekbone nose injury sprained ankle and body bruises and under treatment at San Jacinto Memorial hospital. Prinzel was treated and released after saying he was driving about 40 miles an hour when the crash snapped the utility pole about ten feet up and nearly demolished the car.
Artillerymen watched Terry Moore in slacks and sweater instead of her famed ermines. The visiting Hollywood troupe staged a performance amid controversy over her bathing suit. George Murphy urged her to leave Korea but recalled the order after she promised not to wear the suit again.
United Press reports Texas holiday traffic toll climbing as Texans head home after Christmas. At least 55 killed this season with injuries and more fatalities expected. West Texas crash kills three women from Denison and Dallas. Belgian cadet van Vooren dies near San Antonio. two San Antonio pedestrians die. San Angelo fire kills two children Juan and Delphina Garcia in their home.
A United Press survey shows 279 people killed in highways, fires, and other mishaps since midweek with 228 highway deaths and 27 miscellaneous incidents. Safety officials warn the peaceable era could turn deadly as the holiday period ends, with forecasts of further fatalities including a Miles, Texas car train crash that killed three people, William Franklin Davis, 56, and Mr and Mrs William Leon Blanton of Miles.
Washington reports say traveling lawmakers may face scrutiny of expenses including foreign currency funds and per diem. Rep. Clare E. Hoffman requested a public accounting from the administration, urging parity with other officials and demanding details on embassy spending and military travel for inspection tours.

A customer tried Fuller's Grocery door on Christmas morning, spotted by a window peep and reported an armed burglar in the area. Police, auxiliaries, and even National Guardsmen converged, only to learn the suspect was a customer seeking to buy items. Fuller's stays open 24 hours except Christmas when a nightwatch guards it.
In Long Beach California on Christmas Day six liquor crazed youths beat and robbed Charles J. Baker a 28 year old legless Korean War veteran. Baker who lost nine fingers in Korea was dragged from his car and kicked as he pleaded for them to stop. He reported his wife’s Christmas gift watch and ten dollars were taken. He had been released from a hospital to spend the holiday with family. Deputies sought the six suspects after the attack.
Saigon dispatch reports a rapid Viet Minh offensive splitting Indo China, driving into Laos and reaching the Mekong frontier near Thakhek. Thailand declares emergency provinces along the border as refugees and arms resupply move to French union forces. Premier Phouma protests to the United Nations.
