Texas farm land prices to fall in early 1987 says analyst
Land values in Texas are expected to decline for the first half of 1987 despite signs of stabilization elsewhere. Economist Hilary Smith of the Federal Reserve Bank in Dallas notes a drop after years of increases, driven by falling oil prices and weaker beef demand. Average Texas farm land price per acre was 541 in 1986, down from 652 in 1985 and 593 in 1984, with a long-term rise since 1973. Smith cautions the downturn may slow but not bottom out soon.
