Julie Gonzalez, wife of Army Specialist Joseph Gonzalez, hopes he can return home for Christmas. Gonzalez, 23, a vehicle commander with the 177th Charlie Company, deployed in Iraq after a 2002 Baytown Christian Academy graduation. His unit’s tour was extended while based in Baghdad, delaying their return from Mosul. The couple married in 2005 and are based near Fairbanks, Alaska. See home page 6A.
Baytown firefighters sold calendars at a release party to benefit the Baytown Fallen Firefighter's Memorial. About $2,500 was raised by day’s end as volunteers and supporters praised the turnout. Calendar coordinator Chris Crain said the event went smoothly and thanked the community for its support.

Crain notes that 12 bodybuilders are easy to find in big cities while their team comprises average guys, highlighting the appeal of the Baytown firefighters calendar. Patricia Bosnich and her husband Jonathan, with their 10 month old son, escaped a blaze on Thompson Road after grease ignited in the kitchen and vent pulled the fire through the residence. Firefighters arrived about 11:09 a.m. and extinguished the flames in roughly 45 minutes. The kitchen, living room, and office were destroyed. the couple’s bedrooms suffered damage and are unsafe to inhabit. Neighbors offered aid as the family copes with total loss of possessions and salvaged photos and keepsakes.
A Baytown couple was accosted at their Forrest Avenue home by a man in a blue bandana who forced them inside at gunpoint. He demanded cash, cashing a paycheck for $300 at a service station and receiving another $300 from a cousin. The robber then forced the couple to drive to multiple locations using the husband’s phone.
