Deaf man Lang’s case exposes flaws in mental health justice
In Chicago, Donald Lang, deaf since infancy, faced repeated murder charges as courts grappled with his inability to communicate. Experts argued he could never stand trial due to apahsia and brain damage, while attorneys pressed for education and a secure program to prepare him for trial or release. The saga highlights systemic failures, court rulings, and debates over protecting society versus rights of a cognitively limited defendant.
