ExxonMobil to pay penalty for unmonitored sulfur content at refineries
The EPA fined ExxonMobil for sulfur dioxide rule violations after testing showed unmonitored sulfur levels above limits across multiple sites. DOJ officials noted the self report prompted by the company as a factor in the penalty. Exxon says heater streams now comply and the issue stems from a 2005 grandfathering of equipment with new safety guidelines.
