Council and Phone Firm Stall Over Rate Hike Impasse

General Telephone Co and Baytown City Council remain at an impasse over an ordinance raising key rates and freezing base rates to December 31 1972. The matter was referred to the Utility Committee after discussions with division manager Al Chappell. City Attorney Laughlin urged formal written terms, noting the ordinance was nullified by the company’s refusal to agree to the freeze. Leonard Stasney urged a clean restart if negotiations resume, avoiding previous billing disputes. Kentucky seeks a 550000 federal grant for strip mining land reclamation research and demonstration projects. The Detroit Tigers closed the 1970 season with a 41 game, and Laughlin commented on the rate issue and the company’s proposal to freeze bases through June 30 1972.
