Brooks seeks private funds to match 2.1 million for Mustang Island
State Senator Chet Brooks of Pasadena proposed private subscriptions to match a 2.1 million federal grant to buy Mustang Island. He urged telegrams to Gov. Preston Smith and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission, saying current state funds are needed for other park projects and that depleting them would delay development for years. He noted foundations and individuals could underwrite the effort to meet a December deadline and warned that using state funds would jeopardize future park acquisition and development. Mustang Island lies near Padre Island National Park and many Texas areas lack suitable parks.
