Baytown’s top administrator Bob Leiper says after a 37 year career with the city he will retire next month to begin a new chapter. He notes his daughter graduates law school next Saturday and he thanks staff for guiding Baytown during a growth period. Leiper became city manager in 2011 and held prior leadership roles.
Buc ee s Baytown debuts a 60 000 square foot travel center along the I 10 feeder road. Co owners Arch Beaver Aplin and Don Wasek ban trailers from the lot to avoid truck stop branding. After two hours of debate the Baytown city council granted Michael Bell a special use permit for a combined RV park and commercial development on Highway 146 just south of Massey Tompkins Road. Opponent Councilman Hoskins voted no amid concerns over traffic and property values. the decision contrasted with a prior denial on a similar project.
Community members and current staff gathered at Robert E Lee High School Auditorium to honor Henry Armstrong who served as principal for over 30 years. Former colleagues praise his dedication and rapport, noting he was universally respected and easy to work with. The Lee natatorium, later removed for athletic expansion, was named for Armstrong.
Alvaro Rodriguez, 19, faces capital murder charges for the killing of 19 year old Anthony Constante inside his Baytown apartment. Police say an adult male in dark clothes forced entry and shot Constante several times as he was at home with three relatives. Rodriguez, located at a distribution center, remains jailed in Harris County with no bond set.
