Baytown selects Maxwell for $370000 Bayou School job

The Baytown Cedar Bayou school board awarded Maxwell Construction Co. a 370,017 dollar contract to build a new 26 classroom, one story school plant on the northeast Ca ncet site. The project includes an auditorium and cafeteria with a modified heating plan and possible extra 4,000 dollars for under floor ducts. The bid was about 40,000 under the budget and construction may begin immediately with completion set for next August.

Widow of Coach Armstrong joins Baytown school staff

Mrs. Lela Armstrong widow of late Coach George Armstrong of the Robert E. Lee Gasiders joins Baytown schools as a fourth grade teacher at Baytown Elementary. She replaces Miss Connie Kraft who takes a leave and will marry later this month. Armstrong had served as an office aide at Horace Mann and was previously employed in the school system. The move was approved unanimously by the school board and praised by Superintendent Gentry.

100-Foot Barge Sinks Off Morgan's Point

A 100-foot barge in tow of a Houston ship channel tug sank off Morgan's Point after a collision with an inbound freighter. One person was injured, the Mayday operator said. The freighter was the Robert E. Hopkins. the barge was empty and headed for Horton and Horton sand dredge on the San Jacinto River.

Henry Bahrens Dies At Age Of 73

Funeral services for Henry Bahrens Sr. 73, who died Tuesday morning in Graytown hospital, will be at 5 pm Wednesday at Paul A. Lee Funeral Home with graveside services at 10 am Thursday in Thornton Cemetery Thornton Tex. L Bankhead minister of Pasadena Church of Christ will officiate. He lived at 506 West Lohnt and had been in ill health eight years. A native of Germany and formerly employed at the Baytown refinery, he had lived in Baytown since 1931. Honorary pallbearers will be all employees of the Utilities department at the refinery. Survivors include his wife Mrs Bheja Bahrens a son Henry Bahrens Jr two grandchildren Zandra Allen Christie Lea Bahrens and a sister Mrs Anna Beins of Germany.

Ex Con Calhoun Kills Family Then Is Wounded in Dallas

In northeast Dallas Buford Calhoun, 32, killed his wife Mary Calhoun and three children Pamela Sue Patricia Lou and Bobby Lynn, and shot dead his son-in-law John Warren. He fought police sergeant Jim Johns in a booths gun battle and was wounded. an ambulance took him to Parkland hospital.

Illness Claims Baytown Broker W Bill Reichart

W Bill Reichart 69 investment broker died after a long illness in a Baytown hospital. He operated Reichart Investments at 12 East Texas and lived in Baytown ten years after moving from Kansas City Missouri in 1945. He belonged to Baytown BPOE 1649 and chaired the lodge board of trustees and was in the Variety Club. Survived by wife Irene two brothers two sisters and two grandsons. Killer Frost Hits Baytown Area

The first winter frost of the season struck Baytown Monday night as a cold air mass sent temperatures to freezing. Tender vegetation including tropical plants pasture grasses and garden vegetables suffered damage, with Monday morning at 32 degrees and a stronger frost night before. The Tuesday noon high reached 48 degrees signaling a warming trend while more cold weather was expected to continue.
